Internship: During and after

So in this blog post will be about how what skills I have for my internship and what I plan to do to stand out and what I will do after the internship.

The technical skills that I have learned at Year up that will bring value to this company are. I’m able to adapt to new technology quick all I need are the resources for it. My QA skills are good I’m able to write bug reports clearly and also follow test cases as required. I’m a very fast learner and Year up thought me all of those skills and I know it will help me bring value to the company.

Ways that I plan to stand out during my internship is by doing what’s required to be done and go above and beyond that. Also I’ll bring out more of my communication skills although some people might not believe that, but ill try to communicate with my co-workers as much as I can. Something else that will make me stand out is if they need me to stay in longer imp eager to stay longer if required. I think those things will help me stand out during my internship.

My plan after the internship wherever I’m placed if asked to stay to work I’ll say yes to it but I’ll try to make it part time because there’s a lot of programming languages that I want to learn, to help me further in the QA career path. Also if imp not asked for position I would like to get a part time job and continue on with school so it can help me pay off for my classes

12 Best Intern tips

This blog I’ll go over on 12 intern tips that will help me at my internship. I ranked them from 1-12 one being the best even though all of them are good.
1.      Find a Mentor- The reason I chose this first is because when having a mentor they will teach
you everything you need to know. Also they can introduce you to people in the job. At my intern I would apply this by trying to be in contact with a coworker and just he/she questions about the company.
2.      Set personal goals-Having your own goals on the job is something I think is really great because I think it keeps you productive and you can always come up with new goals daily. I would apply this by having a lot of little goals each day at the job and try to accomplish it.
3.      Tackle all tasks with enthusiasm and a positive attitude-This one is really good because whenever someone shows a positive attitude at work. People see that and sometimes evens get other workers around to be in a good mood. I will apply this by not having anything negative affect me during work and just try to worry about my personal problems after work.
4.      Have regular meetings with your supervisor-As an intern having regular meetings with your supervisor is really good because you get to ask questions and ask how your performance is going at work. I will apply this by asking my manager during the meet and greet if I can schedule a meeting at least once a week.
5.      Avoid Negativity-Doing this is really going to help at work because you won’t get stressed as much when someone is being negative at work it’s better to just avoid it. I will apply this by whenever seeing negative attitudes at work to just avoid it and focus on my work.
6.      Never shun a chance to learn more about the Company/Industry-Getting chances to learn about the company shows to your manager/supervisor that you’re really interested in the company and is willing to find out more. I will apply this by whenever getting an opportunity to be at an event about the company to accept the offer and go to the event.
7.      Get as much exposure as possible- Trying to learn more about each department is really helpful because you get  an insight in how each department works and shows you’re really interested. I will apply this by whenever having downtime I will ask to get more exposure in each department at work.
8.      Enjoy yourself-Having a good time while you’re working is a good idea because you won’t be bored at work and you have to love what you do at the job. I will apply this by just being in a positive attitude at work even if im not feeling good.
9.      Don’t be afraid to ask questions- When asking questions I think at first someone should try and solve it on their own and after a while if they can’t just ask the question. I’ll apply this by whenever there’s a situation I cant solve I’ll ask the manager a question or a coworker.
10.  Network, Network, Network- I think networking with co-workers is really important because people will see you as someone who could really talk to. I’ll apply this by trying to get to know every coworker in my department as much as possible.
11.  Take Initiative-This is good at your intern because it shows your dependable and also that your willing to take on a challenge. I’m going to do this by having whenever the manager ask for something to be done I’ll take up on the offer and get it done.
12.  Leave with tangible accomplishments- Leaving with accomplishments is really good because the next you would go to work it makes somebody feel great. Applying this by trying to complete my goals and leaving good with my goals accomplished.

Job experience

Sine I’ve only had one job after I graduated. I worked at Round Table Pizza I thought it would be a exhilarating experience, but on the other hand it wasn't. Here’s the experience I had with it. Some of the responsibilities that I had working there was to make sure the food containers were clean, wash dishes, clean off tables, clean the bathrooms, and mop my section of the floor. Those were all the duties that I had to deal with. The one duty that I liked the most was to clean dishes because it was on the easiest things to do. The ones that I did not care for were the ones that I had to mop the floor and clean bathrooms. The reason why I had no care for it was because I would have clean at random times and it would get dirty again. When I got promoted to supervisor my primary responsibility was to take care of the money in the store. I feel like that responsibility really helped a lot because it was something big and the manger trusted me with the stores money. Skills that I developed that will help me during my internship are good communication skills, customer service help, and keep calm under any pressure. The lessons that I learned about the workplace and I, is that even if I hated my job, I still had to go and perform my best with no complaints and just deal with it. That’s something that I learned while working and I think it’s something good for me to keep on doing.

"Freakonomics"

In the book “Freakonomics” by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner it’s about different scenarios that have happened and give some stats on how it impacts the main problem. The reason why I think the authors wrote this book is because there are a lot of people that worry about different things like crime, cheating, and how parenting works. So the book shows how stuff happens and sometimes it doesn’t make seem as bad as usual. Also there are things that people would not know about unless the book brought it up. Things that left me impressed to me it was the whole book because I like how they bring up certain subjects and make connections on how they relate. The chapter that brought out the most discussion on our book group was the one about the crime rate went lower and how they relate how abortions were related to the crime rate being lower. This book has made me want to read the second book because I was so interested. The only downfall was the big vocabulary in the book I wouldn’t understand some of the words.  The book to me was an enjoyable reading because I was so interested in what the book had to offer.  The language didn’t make me loose interest it made want to find out what the words meant. The terms weren’t explained but by the way they were put at times I got a sense on what the word would mean. The examples that the book put out was really helpful because it would lead to their main point. I would recommend this to someone because it’s a really interesting book and I think other people would enjoy it.

Puppy Mills awareness

In the article Puppy Mills’ Damage to Mental Health by Jennifer Scarlet the main idea about the article is about how dogs that come from puppy mills tend to have mental issues as they get older and aren’t in puppy mills anymore. A type of research that they was that they got two separate litters one going on sale or adoption at 30-40 days and the second litter got acquired at 60 days and they found that the dogs separated young were prone to unwanted behavior (Jennifer Scarlett 2012). These studies show that puppy mills do a bad job on when to sell their puppies since all they care about is their profit and start the next cycle of breeding. So when puppies are born they need their time to bond with their mother and in puppy mills everything is so rushed for the puppies that they tend to get scared. Affects that they will tend to get is puppies from mills are more fearful being touched, and more prone to “star(ing) intently at nothing visible” and “shadow chasing” (Jennifer Scarlett 2012). When puppies are in that age things to make them more social is to probably have another dog to make them social and try to get that fear away from them because if you wait until later on when their adults it will be harder for the fear to go away. It will probably not even go away since they have lived with it for so long so I’m against puppy mills and here’s the URL of the article to find out more about puppy mills.   http://blog.sfgate.com/jscarlett/2012/05/01/puppy-mills%E2%80%99-damage-to-mental-health/

The Social Stigma That I See

Do you know what stigma means? There are many different definitions the one I’m using is social stigma which means to disapprove of someone for either race, religion, or any type of physical illness and etc. the type of stigma that I see today is towards special needs children and when there are kids in special needs a lot of the time there are people who make fun of them just because of their disability. My relationship towards this is that I use to have my sister who did need special needs. She passed away because the conditions of her problems I never got to meet her because she passed away before I was born. She never dealt with anybody in school because she was too young to be in school but I know how some people react to kids or even adults who have special needs.

Society now compared to when I was younger has probably matured up into seeing how special needs kids and adults are because now a lot of people stand up for them and treat them how they need to be treated by not giving them dirty looks or making fun of them behind their backs. The media now is also trying to help by doing commercials that special need people are like us and shouldn’t be mistreated by the way they look. What I see people doing to repair this problem is by giving workshops to young and even older people to not mistreat special needs people but to treat them the way we want to be treated. So awareness has grown for this and it’s a good thing it has because people are now reacting towards it but in a good way.

My Pledges

Pledges are important to me because they help me focus strictly on the three goals that I have, help me become a better person by working on the areas that I need to grow in, and commit me to my goals. I David Flores pledge:

1.      To work my hardest during the internship phase at Year Up by figuring out a solution by myself without asking for help, and when someone gives me a task, I’m going to rely on myself without depending on others.

2.      To participate in class at least two to three times in class everyday by sharing classwork that I know, asking questions that I have, and sharing my answers to articles in group discussions.

3.      To help out my classmates whenever they need help by offering myself as support. This will help me better understand the classwork and remember it.
